First Amendment:
Unions and Coerced speech
Friedrichs
v. California Teachers Association has sparked a dispute that could affect
the
structure
of job development in the United States, Rebecca Friedrichs has
filed a claim that,
supporting in any way or giving money to a union
violates they're freedom of speech. ''The suit claims
state “agency shop” laws, which require public employees to pay union dues
as a condition of employment, violate well-settled principles of freedom
of speech and association.'' The case is directly related to an early
case in 1977 ''Abood v. Detroit
Board of Education'' that ruled that ''union shop'' is legal in both
public and private sectors, forcing
workers to pay dues for
collective bargain.
